The Path Home

The central idea of this project named “My way home” (the project’s name was inspired by Karel Václav Rais’s poem of the same name) is the work with the memory of a landscape. The project concerns a 700-metre-long area which is part of what used to be a road near Stráž nad Nežárkou. First of all, I try to return the road its original purpose. Also, I try to find out its historic foundation. Finally, I try to return the road its integrity. The road used to go from the village of Dvorce to the now cancelled Gabler’s mill (house number 98) in Stráž nad Nežárkou. The Diploma also includes an observation of the changes of the landscape near the village. The Diploma itself consists of three phases: The road, apple trees, The object.

The bachelor's thesis deals with the villages that disappeared due to the construction of the Dukovany nuclear power plant. The goal of the work is to create an educational trail that would resemble the earlier settlement. Furthermore, the change of the landscape structure and texture, the definition of the main landscape-forming factor and the influence of man are addressed in the thesis. The work consists of a literature search and research. The literary research discusses the topics of regional memory, the history of the cultural landscape, local identity, genius loci, defunct settlements and the cause of their demise. The re-search first describes the area of interest, describes the construction of the nuclear power plant and the displacement of the affected villages. Information about the villages is supplemented by brief demography, history and their historical appearance. Based on interviews with witnesses, the residents of Skryje and Lipňany were registered. This information was added to the drawings of the villages, where buildings were drawn according to historical aerial photographs. The change in landscape structure and texture and the fundamental influence of collectivization on this phenomenon were described. The location is sought after by tourists because of the nuclear power plant and the Mohelen serpentine steppe. The work includes a proposal for an educational trail that passes through all three defunct villages around the nuclear power plant.

Without a trace

Without a trace explores the possibilities of working with the so-called memory of landscape, which I understand as a certain open, ongoing and changing composition of narratives, motifs, people and objects of different origins and different natures. These components and sources of memory all relate to the period of World War II and in particular to the theme of anti-fascist partisan resistance. The resulting intermedia work was preceded by field research, during which I gathered a wealth of material on the subject that led me to create a kind of alternative cartography. The map and the educational trail through the landscape of Vysočina, supported by text in the form of an audioguide, are the formats of the resulting work and an attempt to break away from the great simplistic narratives of war, partisans and resistance. They focus on the small stories of the actors of the resistance, not only Czech and Soviet partisans and refugees, but also local residents. The resulting format guides the user through the physical landscape and connects it to different interpretations of its history. My own version of the landscape memory is admittedly also influenced by my personal experiences from my childhood in Vysočina.

Deserted settlements in the basin of the Zdíkovský stream as part of landscape memory in the Czech borderland

The thesis deals with the topic of landscape memory, especially with the historical landscape structures present in the landscape of borderland during the post-war expulsion of its inhabitants. These are material reminders of the past, the former settlement and land use and in some cases can still serve an ecological function, have aesthetic, educational or historical value or the value of a landscape symbol. The aim of the thesis is to find, document, evaluate, research the state and discuss the significance and use of historical landscape structures from this period. In the research part, the work deals with the problematics of changes in the landscape, its memory and historical landscape structures in the context of the post-war expulsion of its inhabitants. In the practical part, the author documents the occurrence of landscape structures at the time of expulsion using historical aerial photographs and the current orthophoto, digital model of relief 5G and field research using the software QField. Historical landscape structures are categorized based on the criteria of preservation and use and the most significant ones are selected. Paměť krajiny mikroregionu Ivančicko

The diploma thesis is concerned with the landscape memory of the Ivančicko micro-region. The micro-region is in the South Moravia Region, in the south-west part of the Brno-country district. The micro-region includes three towns and nine villages. Methodologically, the thesis is based on literature reviews for published information, comparative method, semi-standardized interviews, SWOT analysis and own field investigation. In the theoretical part, the fundamental concepts are first defined, followed by a brief description of the whole micro-region, a selection of its monuments, countryside and landscape protection. In the conclusion, the historical development and present-day dominant features of the micro-region are described in brief. It follows from the results that the selected micro-region parts of interest, i.e. the cadastral lands of Ivančice and Kounické Předměstí, do not differ much in their landscape conditions; however, the historical development of these two territories was different. In both of them, the most important effects were brought about by the Industrial Revolution and, later, by socialist economy, the collectivization of agriculture in particular. On the basis of semi-standardized dialogues regarding only the landscape around Ivančice and Oslavany, a total of 32 values were obtained. The results then indicate that the landscape of the micro-region used to be rich in beautiful spots but, by now, most of them have irreversibly changed their appearance or vanished altogether.

Krajinná paměť venkova - případová studie mikroregionu Jilemnicko

The aim of the thesis is a memory of a Jilemnicko micro-region landscape. Four areas, which are closely described in the thesis, are situated in this micro-region. The research of a literature, a comparative method, semi-standardized dialogues, own field investigation and a SWOT analysis were used to collect the data. First of all, at part of a literature research, there are basic concepts primarily specified. Consequently, the whole micro-region is described in the thesis. The localities are defined from a physical-geographical, ecological, landscaping, historical and cultural point of view. The comparative method, based on a comparison of a historical and current cartographical and photographical evidence, is used to analyse the changes of landscape structures. The data of particular kinds of grounds are also acquired and used. In the method of semi-standardized dialogues, the changes of the grounds and the value of a landscape were described by the local people. The comparative method, the method of semi-standardized dialogues, own field investigation and a SWOT analysis helped to design a new utilization of the ground.

Object in Landscape

The master thesis Object in Landscape deals with the relationship of a human and the landscape. As humans can never detach themselves from their subjective perception of reality, they determine the criterion of the perception and relating oneself to the landscape. The objective of this work is to compare and contrast the viewpoint of landscape presented in the literature with the author's personal experience as well as the personal experience of artists working in or with the landscape. This confrontation results on the one hand in the presented art work, on the other hand in a series of educational tasks providing the validation of the theory.

Landscape memory in the memory of its inhabitants Horní Bezděkov district

The title of this work is Landscape memory in the memory of its inhabitants Horní Bezděkov district. The area was chosen because the agriculture still works here in some extent, although not as many as before years ago. Accordingly, it can be assumed, there were certain changes in the landscape of this area over time. The work deals with the evolution and changes of the landscape. The first part of this work deals with the landscape, its structure, contrast, etc in general. In the second part of this work are stated specific changes of landscape in a selected area of interest. The main documents for monitoring are the orthophotomap from the 50s of the 20th century and orthophotomap from 2014, also available statistical data and qualitative surveys with respondents. These documents are compared with each other, thus providing a comprehensive picture of the evolution of landscape changes in Horní Bezděkov.

Landscape memory in the memory of its inhabitants - Dolní Hbity district

The name of the thesis is: Cadastral Area of Dolní Hbity s Landscape in Memories of its Inhabitants. The thesis aims to map changes in this particular landscape. In order to realizing those changes it was necessary to settle main trends and how they impacted the area of Dolní Hbity. The main body part of the bachelor thesis bases on primary changes realized from the available sources and maps, with addition of res-pondent answers. Firstly, the thesis introduces common literature, knowledge and information, which are consequently used in researching the changes. The second part is researching the actual changes and creating analysis of landscape, based on ČÚZK data, available maps, which are compared to the respondents answers. Or-tophotomaps, from 1948 and 2014, are used as the main source, and additionally available information about the area sizes, with comparison of respondents answers. Those sources are evaluated each other, the result forms united analysis of changes in the particular landscape, which helps observe changes and movements in the land-scape, which actually happened during the observed time period.
